Glad you finally found the right cable, it amazes me sometimes how the minor parts of Harleys can be such a big pain in the ass to find........

I don't know if I'd call it dramatic. It's a pain in the ass...

The guy behind the counter referred to 1987 as being part of the "Wonder Years" for HD...

Gotta buddy that has a 94 FXR, his front end is shorter.

I got a speedo again...

Ended up back at the dealer, with the first two cables (FXR and FXRS-SP) being too short...

They went through some books looking at the over all length of the cables and ended ordering a cable for a Sportster. it was longer than either cable spec'd for my bike. Perfect fit.

Asked me if it made any difference to me whether it was a HD cable or after market. I asked for the difference in price. Of course the after market was cheaper. So, I went with it. Saved $17.00 and change. HD cable was over twice the price...

Thats what I meant... But you are right have the dealer find the right one-- or the parts store if that fails..

I think I'm gonna give the stealer one more try. They got my money already, let them get me the right part or give me my money back. I had to go to dentist yesterday or I would've gone after work. I'll do it today...

If that don't work, I will take the advice of Abo and Preacher and find one of the "universal" cables or a speedo repair shop. I used to know where one is locally. Not sure if it's there anymore...

Thanks Everyone!

Dave: Like Abo said, universal...and, if you can find a speedometer repair shop someplace, they should have a "clamp" that squares the end of a cable, so what you could do is buy ANY HD cable that will fit on the back of your speedo, and is long enough for what you need, then take it to the speedo shop, and get them to cut the housing, and the inner, clamp it, then go home and put it on.
Hope this helps,
RSDF

I bet since you speedo cable has the little flat on each end that indexes your drive unit and also the other end for the speedometer-- you'll have to go factory or aftermarket to get one.  JMO....

Steve - There's more than one cable for these bikes. One for an "FXR" and another for an "FXRS", not sure if there's a third for the "FXRS-SP".

Abo - I didn't even know that was an option. Never heard of "Universal speedometer cables" that you cut to fit. That might be the route to go.

What I don't understand is that I never messed with the old speedo cable when I changed to the 4-inch risers and put the tubes back in the right place in the trees. (Previous owner lowered the front end by raising the tubes in the trees) I just assumed that it had a stock cable...

No apology necessary Preacher. This thread is about wrapped up. Got about 50 miles on the rebuilt engine and it's running great. No oil leaks & it purrs like a kitten. Can't wait to open it up.

I did return the short speedo cable on Saturday. Stealer did a swap for the "right one". But, even that is about 3" too short. While I was there, I did find out where my favorite machine shop moved to and got a recommendation for a good dyno tuner...

Hey:
Mom came through with flying colors. They put a pin in her hip, she will be up and about tomorrow so they say, then to rehab for awhile, and back to the rest home. (where, she has decided is a nice place, she likes it, and wants to go back there)
Thanks for the prayers and the kind thoughts,
God bless,
