Man those gremlins have sharp teeth! Hope you put a new oil pump in her.
Every time I rebuild any motor, oil pump is the first thing to get replaced.

I think I went a few miles too far with it. If I'd done it sooner, I think that all the valves could've been saved. Either way, they're all being replaced.

Yup, bottom and top are being done.

I took a look at everything this morning while I was there. Cases are apart, flywheels are separated, Its stripped down. I don't think that there's any sense in screwing around with it. Do it right and do it all at once.

I didn't really "compare". But, I ran into a guy that went through the MoCo Reman program with his engine though, this was a few weeks ago. He was really happy with the engine in his 92 FXR.

But, said that by the time it was all said and done, it had cost him close to $4-grand. All labor was done at the stealer, guess that's a big chunk of the cost. Indy is charging me less than half of that...

He had one of the local indys install an SE cam after he got the bike back...

The EV23 was ok. But, I think the new cam will make a nice difference in power. Still have a decent low-end with better mid-range. I didn't want to go as big as an EV46. Too much cam for my style of riding.

I was planning on pulling the engine myself, taking it in for the rebuild and then reinstalling it in the bike. But, for the price difference ($400.00) I figured that dropping the bike off and then being able to ride it home, it was worth it. I get my bike back all tuned and ready to go. Just have to do the break in. So, I've got to fix the speedo so I can do the break in right. Indy backs up the engine for 6-months or 5000 miles...

Nope, you can still buy your next airplane for the same low price...LOL

well since you aint sure how miles its got on it ,yer pretty lucky it wasnt torn up worse than that. did you compare the cost of rebuild at indy vs sending it back to the factory for a exchange?? course from the factory you,d have a complete stock motor , think the indy and the upgrade is the way to go.this aint gonna effect the price of the next airplane i buy from boeing is it ??? LMAO

Sort of a long post. But, I figured I'd give you a bit of the detail on what happened...

Ridin' to work the other morning, the bike ran out of gas, so I switched it to reserve and got off the freeway and filled up. Sitting at a red-light waiting to get back on the freeway, I noticed quite a bit of smoke rolling past me. Looked at my pipe and it was smokin' pretty good. With the 2-into-1, I couldn't tell which cylinder was smoking. So, I went ahead and got back on the freeway and over in the 3rd lane to pass a truck and the engine went flat. It was way down on power. My right thigh was getting pretty warm. So, I looked down the rear pipe was glowing bright red. Not a good sign. I managed to ride if off the freeway to a gas station and called AAA for a ride home. Full throttle just to get it off the freeway and stay out of the way of the cars on the road...

When I got it home, I didn't bother with doing a compression check. Just figured I either burnt a valve or the timing moved. Causing combustion in the pipe (The glow in the rear pipe) So, into the indy it went. They set the timing for me when I installed the single-fire ignition a few week ago. If it had moved, they'd fix it. But, I really just figured it was a valve and time for the engine rebuild that I'd been threatening to do.

I figured right. Got the bike in to the indy on Wednesday afternoon. Called Jose yesterday morning and asked him what he found when he tore it down. Answer sorta surprised me. I broke the rear exhaust valve. Minimal damage to the rear cylinder. It will clean up at .005" over.

I also asked what shape the bottom end was in. He told me that it was the perfect time to get it in. It was worn, but not wasted. The rods were a little too loose. So, I consider myself fortunate that I got it in when I did. Complete rebuild and should be back to me sometime late next week. (Thursday or Friday)

While it's apart, upgrading to an Andrews EV27 cam (from an EV23) getting new .005" over pistons and rings, stainless-steel valves, rebuilt crank, new rods, etc. No Chinese parts going in. Got in touch with Stephen Mullen over at VTwin Cafe (http://www.nightrider.com/) and talked to them about it. He says with the pipe, carb and ignition I have, I should have a dependable engine that should make about 70 horsepower.

Been a damned expensive week...
