One thing that I didn't mention in the previous post, We were all sittin' there after the church service, bikes runnin' waiting for the procession to start. We were staged behind the family and the military VIPs and there were about half a dozen Majors and Colonel's came through shaking our hands and thanking us??? I couldn't believe it. All I could say was "No, thank you!"...
Very respectfull indeed!

St. Joseph Catholic Church
550 Glendora Ave.

Interment to follow at:

Queen of Heaven Cemetery,
2161 South Fullerton Rd.,

Haven't been to that church or cemetary since we buried my dad back in December 1999...

Hell of a day for me today. Rode PGR for Major Labouff. At the same church and cemetary as both my parents. I haven't been to either of those places since we buried my dad. I just can't bring myself to go. If either of them we sitting there, I'd be there every day. But, I can "talk" them from anywhere. So, I took the time to visit their graves and "talk" to them for a few minutes.

The funeral went off without a hitch. About 20 of us showed up. Participated in the funeral procession and the graveside service. It turns out, my suspicions were correct. I knew the family from when we were all kids. Lot's of high ranking brass there too. Lowest man on "Color-Guard" was wearing a bird. There were a few Spec-Op guys there. One single star and then a two Star also. This guy was connected...

Marine buried in Monrovia

MONROVIA - Due to a paperwork mix-up, 21-year-old slain Marine and Monrovia resident Raul Mercado was buried Thursday in Monrovia instead of in Mexico as the family had planned.

Adela Gastelum, a family service director at Douglass & Zook Mortuary in Monrovia, which handled Mercado's funeral, said everyone, including Mexican officials, was striving to untangle the red tape that would have allowed Mercado, a U.S. citizen, to be buried in Mexico.

The family wanted him buried in Ixtlahuacan Del Rio in the state of Jalisco, whose capital is Guadalajara, Gastelum said.

But family members, emotionally and physically exhausted by his death, gave up and had him buried at Monrovia's Live Oak Memorial Park at 3 p.m. Thursday.

It was a small service, Gastelum said, attended only by family members and a Marine honor guard.

Even though Mexican Embassy and consulate officials; Rep. David Dreier, R-Glendora; Marine officials in Dover, Del.; and Douglas & Zook officials were working on the problem, Gastelum said Mercado's burial could have been delayed until next week.

The Guard is going to funeral Sunday, The WBC is suppossed to be there.

http://www.heraldtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060121/NEWS/601210405

SARASOTA -- The Sunday funeral service for a Sarasota soldier killed in Iraq could be turned into a spectacle of screaming protesters from an anti-gay group and the roaring Harley-Davidsons of a nationwide veterans organization.

For the second time in a month, members of the Westboro Baptist Church, a Kansas-based group which claims the United States is being punished by God for being friendly to homosexuals, plan to protest in Southwest Florida. The group, whose Web site says the country should outlaw sodomy and impose the death penalty for offenders, protested the newly formed Gay Straight Alliance at Port Charlotte High School last month.

This time, Westboro is taking aim at the funeral of Army helicopter pilot Kyle Jackson, 28, who was killed Jan. 13 when his helicopter was shot down by insurgents near Mosul, Iraq.

Westboro claims to have held more than 22,000 anti-gay demonstrations since 1991. But in the past year it has tried to connect its anti-gay rhetoric to the deaths of U.S. soldiers in Iraq, holding protests at more than 20 soldier funerals across the country.

Shirley Phelps-Roper, the daughter of Westboro pastor Fred Phelps, said the group had already planned to be in Tampa this weekend for a protest of Gay Straight Alliance groups there.

"And then here came this opportunity to help the people of Sarasota connect the dots, and they certainly deserve that opportunity," Phelps-Roper said. "We're going to remind them that there is a God and a heaven and a hell and a day of choice."

Phelps-Roper said America is "feeling the sword of God" because it is pro-gay. A disapproving God "has become America's terrorist" and is sending soldiers home in body bags as proof, Phelps-Roper said.

Fred Phelps claims the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States were God's punishment on a "gay-enabling" nation.

"From the beginning, Phelps' group has been the single most vicious anti-gay group in America, bar none," said Mark Potok, who directs hate group investigations for the Southern Poverty Law Center, a Montgomery, Ala.-based civil rights organization.

"But in recent years," Potok added, "Phelps has spiraled downward into utter madness. He is a walking hate crime."

The funeral protests have been roundly criticized by communities across the country. Some communities and states have gone so far as to consider drafting legislation to stop them.

Potok said the Southern Poverty LawCenter is trying to determine if any such legislation could be crafted to pass constitutional muster.

Kyle Jackson's father, Gary Jackson, said sheriff's officials alerted him to the protest.

"I expected stuff like this," Jackson said. "What it is, is they want to take advantage of the high media situation to make their statement."

He said his son's funeral will go on without a problem.

"Kyle is an American hero," he said. "The bigger stir they make, the bigger the hero he becomes. It won't hurt my feelings; we will deal with it. We have a great and caring community here and this is something that is in God's hands."

Westboro Baptist Church consists mostly of Phelps family members; only one other family in Topeka has joined the church.

Phelps has 13 children, but four are estranged from their father and have nothing to do with the church, according to Potok.

Phelps-Roper said about 10 church members plan to be at Jackson's funeral, planned for 1 p.m. Sunday at Phillippi Estate Park, 5500 S. Tamiami Trail.

If they want their message heard, they'll have to raise their voices above the din of perhaps hundreds of motorcycle engines.

The Patriot Guard is a nationwide coalition of veterans formed last year in direct response to Westboro's picketing of soldier funerals.

Their goal is to shield the family and friends of the soldiers from seeing or hearing Westboro's screaming, sign-waving protesters. The Patriot Guard tries to position its members between where the Westboro group demonstrates and the path of mourners.

"We're not counterprotesters or protesters," said Clayton Murphy, a Patriot Guard coordinator and a Coast Guard veteran who lives in Tampa. "We're there for one objective only and that's to protect the family.

"... We'll fire up the engines and drown them out so other people don't have to hear their hatred."

Local man loved by schoolmates served in Iraq
By Emanuel Parker Staff Writer
Pasadena Star-News
MONROVIA - The mourners were brown, black and white, old and young. Many knew Raul Mercado, some had only heard of him, others wished they had known him.

The Rev. Charles Ramirez, who presided over Wednesday's Mass of the Resurrection at Immaculate Conception Church in Monrovia, called Mercado "a noble young man who took pride in serving his country."

Mercado, a 21-year-old Marine lance corporal and 2004 graduate of Monrovia High School, was killed Jan. 7 when his vehicle hit a roadside bomb near Al Karmah, Iraq. He is the first Monrovia resident to die in the Iraq conflict.

Deacon Mike Salcido estimated there were 500 people at Wednesday's service and another 500 at Tuesday's Rosary/vigil.

Isidore Guardado, 59, of Duarte, a Vietnam veteran who served there from 1966 to 1969, was one of them.

"I don't know who he is," Guardado said, "but he was in the service and I've just learned as a combat veteran that we all fall together."

Ramirez said Mercado "is an example of someone who can love both countries and can work for the betterment of both countries."

Monrovia Mayor Rob Hammond, speaking through an interpreter, told the family:

"I commit to you, Mrs. Mercado, that the city of Monrovia will never forget Raul. Today, tomorrow and forever, we owe you a debt of gratitude."

Mercado was born in the United States, but joined his family in Mexico for several years before relatives persuaded him that getting an education here was in his best interests.

In high school he was a member of the Spanish Honor Society and played junior varsity basketball, and was also a member of the track and cross-country teams.

"We had every class together," said weeping former classmate Princess Jasmine. "He was just always smiling, so full of spirit. Just such a positive person."

Adam Bruce, 19, of Monrovia, said both he and his mother knew Mercado.

"I was on the basketball team at Monrovia High School with him. My mom knew him too. He worked with her at Mervyn's. He was just a great guy, always willing to help other people. He was a good friend," Bruce said.

Mercado was assigned to the 2nd Maintenance Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, regularly stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Ramirez recalled how Mercado wanted to attend West Point, but failed on his first attempt because he was still learning English.

Even though Mercado graduated with a 3.5 GPA and gained admittance to several colleges, Ramirez said he decided to join the Marines and learn something about life and the military before giving West Point a second try.

"It's sad," Ramirez said, "but if more young people had the values of Raul, this would be a better country."

Monrovia police Chief Roger Johnson led a contingent of officers at the funeral.

"The fact that Raul is being honored today is an important thing not only for the friends of Raul but also for the city to recognize his sacrifice and to pay our tribute to him as well," he said. "I think it's important that we as a city-family should be here to support Raul's family."

After the two-hour service, mourners traveled to Monrovia's Live Oak Memorial Park where Mercado received a 21-gun salute from a Marine honor guard.

Mercado is survived by his mother, Celia, two sisters and a younger brother. He will be buried in Mexico.

Got this from another board. Rearranged things a little to make it run in historical order. I thought that it was good though..

Cindy Sheehan asked President Bush, "Why did my son have to die in Iraq"

A mother asked Bill Clinton, "Why did my son have to die in The Balkans?"

A Mother asked President Nixon and Johnson, "Why did my son have to die in Viet Nam?"?

A mother asked Harry Truman, "Why did my son have to die in Korea"?

Another mother asked Franklin D. Roosevelt, "Why did my son have to die at Iwo Jima"?

Another mother asked Woodrow Wilson, "Why did my son have to die on the battlefield of France"?

Yet another mother asked Abraham Lincoln, "Why did my son have to die at Gettysburg"?

And yet another mother asked George Washington, "Why did my son have to die near Valley Forge"?

Then long ago, a grieving mother asked, "Heavenly Father, why did my Son have to suffer, and die on a cross outside of Jerusalem"?

The answers are similar: so that others may have life and live in freedom, peace, and happiness.

Thanks Bro, Bitch is, there's at least one more...

I can't even begin to tell you how difficult attending these funerals are for me. It's an emotional roller-coaster. The fact that the guy layin' there was one of America's warriors and willing to give everything he had (and gave it) tears me apart.
