Kind of a long read. But, this was in the editorials of the local paper this morning. Just one thing I'd like to point out, military helicopters and fixed wing airplanes are considered "High Performance" vehicles. They are used in much different and tougher situations than small commercial or private aircraft. So, the likelyhood of one augering in is much higher.

Also, I have a buddy that did 20 in the Marines, and did a pretty sizeable number of crash investigations for various aircraft. Rarely, if ever does the govenment release the results of the investigation. The press and congress went nutso on the VS-22 (Osprey) recently. But, when a bird is under development and going through flight test, the situation is different.

Again, it's a bit of read and it also names a couple of local guys that were killed in Iraq...

We need answers
Steve Scauzillo
San Gabriel Valley Tribune
WHY is it when a helicopter or small plane crashes in the Southland, the NTSB sends investigators, a report is filed and new safety regulations are recommended or recast. Yet, a Black Hawk helicopter crashed in Iraq a week ago killing all 12 Americans on board and that's the last we hear about it.

It's outrageous that we as Americans can pore over a small plane crash here, or a metro train vs. car collision that resulted in stronger locomotives, yet after a military craft disaster - the worst in a year - we blink and go back to our routines.

Can I at least get a collective sob? An official investigation? In the very least, a public explanation of what happened? Yeah, I've heard the excuses, war is hell and people die. But these are our soldiers fighting for our freedom. Their families deserve to hear the straight truth of what happened in the Iraqi desert. And we all need to work toward ways that make our soldiers and all civilians there safer.

I didn't know Douglas La Bouff, one of the 12 victims who died instantly when the Black Hawk crashed. I read in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune he grew up in Baldwin Park and La Puente, graduated from Bishop Amat High School in 1987, and after earning a bachelor's degree from Whittier College went on to get his master's degree from Cal State Fullerton.

I, too, recently earned a master's from CSUF. I, too, am married to a "Karen" and also am the father of two children. But I can't hold myself up to La Bouff, who put himself in harm's way, who sacrificed himself for me, while the greatest harm I face is a paper cut or getting yelled at by an unsatisfied reader.

But in some way, we are connected. He was a dad, a husband, a member of our community. I grieve for him. No, his family's loss is not the same as what we, as strangers, may feel. But the community must feel the loss, we must feel something, if not the outrage of losing not one but two of our very own in the same week in incidents that could have been prevented.

Also on Thursday, the Star-News ran a story about the death of a 21-year-old soldier from Monrovia, Raul Mercado, who died when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb (Improvised Explosive Device) in Iraq. Mercado was the first serviceman from Monrovia to die in this war. His 3.5 GPA from Monrovia High School stands as a shining example. His desire to serve his country goes beyond the self-serving goal of good grades.

Why are we still losing our best and brightest to roadside bombs? To helicopters that crash without taking a single bullet of enemy fire?

I asked Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Pasadena, if anything could be done to better shield our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan from accidents and IEDs. He has been working on getting more armored vehicles for our soldiers since the war began in March 2003.

He told me Thursday in a telephone call that he's not happy with the Pentagon response. While we don't know if the vehicle Lnce. Cpr. Mercado was riding in in Al Karmah was fortified when it struck the IED, Schiff said a local soldier who recently returned from Iraq told him none of the vehicles he rode there were armored.

"Yet we continue to get assurances from the Pentagon that all the vehicles are armored ... that is pretty astounding," said Schiff.

In the past, the Pentagon has said the factories can't produce the armored vehicles fast enough to supply existing troops overseas.

"I would like to see materials turned around and put into production faster. If it was a question of running factories around the clock, my constituents would stand in line and do night shifts. I'd be there with them," he said.

And what about Black Hawk helicopters? Schiff reminded me that they were grounded in 2002 after transmission problems surfaced. There's no evidence that mechanical problems have re-surfaced. But there's no evidence they haven't. Which indicates to me, we need an investigation by Congress into why they go down.

Schiff, who was ferried in a Black Hawk during a recent visit to Baghdad, offered that these helicopters are used quite often - day and night - and the sheer frequency increases the likelihood of a crash.

"They also fly fast and low to the ground (to escape enemy fire) ... those are perilous flying conditions," he said. Also, sand can play havoc with instruments and pilots can become disoriented during a sand storm, often confusing up with down, he said.

All are good theories. But I'd still like to know exactly what happened to two of the Valley's finest men. And if there's anything we as a community can do to make our boys safer.

Spot, I see from your IP Address that you're real close. San Dimas is what's coming back. I'm in Monrovia, just west on the 210... Myrtle Ave... 7-11 on Foothill...

I saw that in the paper a couple of weeks ago. (About the dog). I even posted it here I believe. Keep us informed and if there's anything we might be able to do locally, let me know. OL was hot as hell over that. I got a dammed petting zoo runnin' around my house. Animal people here...

Good for you Spot!  Unfortunately noone will probably ever come forward.    But if you really want to get it out....first thing would be flyers.  You can get them copied pretty cheap if you stick with a greyscale.  Have them copied on pastel papers, which stand out better....and have ppl plaster them everywhere....at least maybe the person will see that someone is looking for him.  Then see if you can get a local paper to donate an ad.  Or better yet a story, along with offering a reward.

Good Luck to you!

The reward of $1,000 will be paid by me to whoever provides enough evidence and or is willing to testify in a Pasadena court of law re: the person(s) responsible for this act.  If there is anyone who would like to add to the reward amount, there will be a special, separate account set up for contributions.  The details have not been finalized as yet, but I will keep you informed.
