Mouse Sets House on Fire

The Associated Press
FORT SUMNER— A mouse got its revenge against a homeowner who tried to dispose of it in a pile of burning leaves. The blazing creature returned to the man's house and set it on fire.
Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner said he caught the mouse inside his house and wanted to get rid of it.
"I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," Mares said from a motel room Saturday.
Village Fire Chief Juan Chavez said the burning mouse ran to just beneath a window. The flames spread up the window and throughout the house.
All contents of the home were destroyed, he said. No injuries were reported.
Unseasonably dry and windy conditions have charred more than 53,000 acres and destroyed 10 homes in southeastern New Mexico in recent weeks.
"I've seen numerous house fires," village Fire Department Capt. Jim Lyssy said, "but nothing as unique as this one."

Schwarzenegger OK After Motorcycle Mishap

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger received 15 stitches in his lip Sunday after he and his 12-year-old son were involved in a motorcycle accident near their home, his spokeswoman said.

Schwarzenegger was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle with his son Patrick in the sidecar when another driver backed into the street, spokeswoman Margita Thompson said in a statement.

"The governor was unable to avoid the vehicle in his path and collided with it at a low speed," she said.

Schwarzenegger and his son were treated for cuts and bruises at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica and released, Thompson said. Both were wearing helmets at the time, she said. They were recovering at home Sunday night.

The other driver was not injured. No citations were issued in the accident in the city's Brentwood section, said Officer Jason Lee, a police spokesman.

The governor was expected to keep his appointments Monday.

In December 2001, Schwarzenegger broke six ribs and was hospitalized for four days after a motorcycle crash in Los Angeles.

The accident occurred when a car stopped in front of him and he was unable to change lanes to avoid the vehicle. His ribs were broken when his chest hit the motorcycle windshield.

"It was very painful, much more painful than the heart surgery," he said at the time, referring to an operation he had in 1997 to replace a heart valve. "A rib breaking is like the worst."

Man lights fire bombs, ignites himself, home
Parking feud believed to be motive
By Samantha Gonzaga Staff writer
Pasadena Star-News
DOWNEY - Not many people knew how Gene Berger's house looked.

The 85-year-old had hidden his home behind a chain-link fence, a "Private Property" sign and the thick foliage of several lemon and orange trees - a stark contrast to his neighbors' unfenced and open lawns.

And after early Sunday morning, all they'll have to go by are the remains of his Spanish-style house's charred foundation, the skeletal frame of his van and a sea of black mud littered with torn book pages, newspapers and melted plastic curios.

Around 4:45 a.m. Berger, armed with two pistols, ignited fire bombs on the front porch of two neighboring homes on the cul-de-sac of Bergman Lane, authorities said. Then, his arm engulfed in flames as police arrived, he went inside his house, which caught fire, exploded and burned to the ground. His body was found in the ruins, said Downey fire Capt. Brian Wolf.

One of the homes he targeted, a one-level, sustained significant damage in its kitchen, dining and living rooms. The other house, a two-story home across the street, was undamaged because a 5-gallon canister of gasoline planted on its porch failed to ignite. A strip mall on the other side of the cul-de-sac road also was damaged. No other injuries were reported. Arson and police detectives continue to investigate the incident.

According to police reports, Berger had a long-standing conflict with his neighbors over parking on the sidewalk near his house. "There was a neighborly feud that went on with parking," Wolf said.

A soldier's burial
Army specialist died in Iraq
By Rod Leveque Staff Writer
San Gabriel Valley Tribune
GLENDALE - Sergio Gudino was remembered as a war hero and loyal family man Saturday during a somber ceremony too short for all the warm memories of his life, and in a church too small to hold all the people who loved him.

Gudino, a 21-year-old Army specialist from Pomona, died in Iraq on Christmas day when a bomb exploded near the M1-A1 tank he was driving in Baghdad.

Friends, relatives and fellow soldiers recalled the married father as a "gentle giant" during services at the Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in Glendale.

His hulking size allowed him to fill a room by himself, they said. But he also had the heart to match.

He was a straight-A student and a tremendous athlete who inspired everyone he knew. He could have accomplished anything he wanted in life, they said, but he died doing what he loved: Fighting for his country.

"Sergio fought for something he believed in," said his father, Victor. "He loved being a soldier, he loved his job."

Hundreds of people crowded inside the brown, stone church on the grounds of Forest Lawn. The crowd grew so large that many attendees had to stand in the back or listen to the services from a nearby room.

Nearly a hundred scruffy motorcycle riders, many Vietnam veterans, waited outside near their bikes in a show of respect.

Two of Gudino's Army buddies, both freshly home from Iraq, said he was a hard-charging soldier and "probably the best friend someone could have."

"He is a hero," said Sgt. J.P. Akers, who served in the same platoon. "He will not be forgotten."

Gudino joined the Army in 2003, two years after he graduated from Claremont High School. He was deployed to Iraq a year ago.

"One thing was for sure," said his widow, Candy, "he loved being a soldier and he gave it his all."

He was buried with full military honors.

Gudino's casket was lowered to the ground. His 3-year-old son, Cyrus, was the first to drop a white flower into the grave.

WBC to picket funeral of Army Spc. Sergio Gudino, 22, of Pomona, California, when his body is returned from Iraq, where he was killed Dec. 25, by IED -- like the IED America used to bomb Westboro Baptist Church, in a vain terroristic attempt to silence our anti-gay Gospel preaching.

My Dad is a retired coal miner, I was raised in a coal mining family.....If they show up, There will be violence. The UMWA is a strong union. The police will not be able to stop the miners. Most of the time when they do strike, the national guard is called because the local police know them miners are crazy, and they have explosives and guns and they aint afraid to use them.....JMHO

I would rather go up against 1%ers than coal miners.......

EDIT - BTW - Need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the links...

Judgment in West Virginia! Thank God for His Outpoured Wrath and for 12 Dead Miners. WBC to picket their Memorial Service - at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 15, at Wesley Chapel, West Virginia Wesleyan College, Camden Ave. & Meade St., Buckhannon, WV - in religious protest & warning: "God is not mocked!" God Hates Fags! & Fag-Enablers! Ergo, God hates the Sago Miners and is tormenting them in Hell, hypocritical Tallmansville village, and West Virginia.

May put the bike back together without a rear brake to make this ride today. It's a confirmed "PGR" ride.
