But,
Democratic critics charged that the soaring deficits showed the total failure of the Bush administration to put the government's fiscal house in order?
Last time I checked, the President proposed a budget and the Congress and the Senate were given an opportunity to tweak it and send it back for signature. Negotiations back and forth until a compromise is reached.
I also don't recall the Executive Branch having the ability to propose anything as far as spending or new laws.
That is part of the duties of the Legislative Branch. Executive Branch can approve or veto only. If there is a veto, that can be over-ridden with a 2/3rds majority on the vote...
Something just wrong with the whole article. Its full of partisan bullshit.

Government announces plans to borrow $27 billion

The Bush administration gave details Wednesday on how it plans to borrow the billions of dollars it will need to cope with the soaring budget deficits.
Those plans include raising $27 billion by selling a new 10-year note and a new 30-year bond at the regularly scheduled quarterly auctions to be held next week. The government needs to borrow $171 billion during the current July-September quarter, the second highest quarterly borrowing total on record.
The increased borrowing needs reflect the exploding federal budget deficit which is projected to more than double in size this year and to hit an all-time high of $482 billion in the 2009 budget year.
The administration released the new deficit forecasts on Monday. It blamed the surge on the sagging economy and the effort to keep the country from falling into a deep recession by mailing out 130 million economic stimulus payments.
Democratic critics charged that the soaring deficits showed the total failure of the Bush administration to put the government's fiscal house in order, however. They contended that whoever wins the presidency in November will inherit a huge fiscal mess that will severely restrain the next president's ability to fulfill his own campaign promises.
The administration projected that the deficit for this budget year, which ends on Sept. 30, will total $389 billion, more than double the $161.5 billion deficit for 2007. For the 2009 budget year, which will cover the first year of the new president, the administration is forecasting a deficit that will surge to an all-time high in dollar terms of $482 billion, far exceeding the old record of $413 billion set in 2004.
That deficit estimate could soar even higher. It does not include the expected full cost of funding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan or the costs associated with a massive housing rescue measure that Congress passed last week and President Bush signed into law on Wednesday.
As part of the housing measure, Congress voted to increase the national debt limit by $800 billion from $9.815 trillion to a new limit of $10.615 trillion.
The borrowing plans announced by the Treasury Department on Wednesday include raising $17 billion by selling a new 10-year note on Aug. 6 and raising $10 billion by selling a new 30-year bond on Aug. 7.

Interesting...
More heads should be rolling. But, that last paragraph, this is the first I've heard of that. Seems all I've been hearing locally is that Boeing is a bunch of whiners for protesting the contract going to EADS/Northrup/Grumman...

A top U.S. Air Force acquisitions official is stepping down, becoming the most senior weapons buyer to depart since the unraveling of a $40 billion contract to buy aerial refueling tankers.
The Air Force said Kenneth Miller, a senior Defense Department official with more than 30 years of government service, will leave at the end of the month. He was the service's point person with Congress on the tanker program.
Mr. Miller held the title of special assistant for acquisition governance and transparency to the secretary of the Air Force. Before coming to the Air Force in 2005 to help the service with its weapons purchases, Mr. Miller worked for the Navy on a variety of acquisitions-related issues.
In June, the Government Accountability Office found eight major faults with the Air Force's decision to award the tanker contract to Northrop Grumman Corp., which teamed up with Airbus parent European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. to offer an Airbus plane for the mission. Boeing Co., which lost the competition, protested, leading to the GAO's ruling.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates said earlier this month that he would reopen the tanker competition with a new fast-track bidding process that will deliver a winner by the end of the year.
Mr. Miller technically retired in February after 34 years of service, but Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne persuaded him to stay on. Mr. Wynne, along with the Air Force's chief of staff, was ousted by Mr. Gates last month over the Air Force's handling of nuclear-weapons security. Mr. Miller, a member of the government's senior executive service, couldn't be reached for comment.
The Air Force has been under intense scrutiny over its alleged mishandling of a variety of high-profile weapons contracts, including the plan to buy 179 aerial refueling tankers. Despite efforts to make such acquisitions more transparent and resistant to protests, the GAO has continued to find fault with the Air Force's ability to pick a clear winner.
Before the tanker protest was upheld, the GAO twice found in favor of Lockheed Martin Corp. and United Technologies Corp.'s Sikorsky unit, which disputed the Air Force's decision to award a $10 billion contract for search-and-rescue helicopters to Boeing. A new winner for that program could be decided as soon as October, almost two years later than originally planned

A 57-year-old south side man, who might have been struggling with a hangover, was charged Friday with shooting his lawn mower with a sawed-off shotgun.

“I'll tell you the truth,” a criminal complaint quotes an apparently inebriated Keith Walendowski. “I got pissed because my lawn mower wouldn't start, so I got my shotgun and shot it.
“I can do that. It’s my lawn mower and my yard, so I can shoot it if I want,” Walendowski told police.
Ignorance of the law, however, is not a legal defense.
Walendowski is charged with a felony count of possessing a short-barreled shotgun and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct while armed. If convicted of both charges, he faces up to six years and nine months in prison.
The shooting occurred Wednesday at a home Walendowski shares with his mother in the 3500 block of S. Austin St.
According to the complaint, Walendowski had been drinking all morning. Around 9:30 a.m., he attempted to start his 21-inch Lawn-Boy — unsuccessfully.
After shooting the mower, he went in his basement, where he was arrested by police, the complaint says.
Police recovered the shotgun, shells, a handgun, rounds for the handgun and a stun gun.
Dick Wagner of Wagner’s Garden Mart, 6075 N. Green Bay Ave. in Glendale, said shooting the mower didn't help Walendowski’s odds of getting it repaired.
“Anything not factory recommended would void the warranty,” he said.

What a crock of shit...6 years & 3 months for shooting your lawnmower...Granted, he may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but this is very excessive...

Secret Service Wants More Money - $106.65 Million Budget Not Enough For Unusual Year

WASHINGTON -- The Secret Service has asked for an extra $9.5 million to cover unexpected costs of protecting the presidential candidates during what has turned into an historic year for the agency's campaign security job.
Among other things, the extra money would be used for the added costs for the candidates' international travel and a late-in-the-game decision by Barack Obama to accept the Democratic nomination at Denver's Invesco Field at Mile High -- an open-air, 76,000-seat stadium -- instead of the 20,000-seat Pepsi Center, which is the site of the party's national convention.
Presidential candidates are traveling overseas with Secret Service protection more than ever before.
Obama is on a six-day trip to Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and Britain. Before that he was on a three-day congressionally sponsored trip to Afghanistan and Iraq. Republican candidate John McCain has traveled to Canada, Colombia and Mexico under the agency's protection.
The 2008 presidential campaign cycle is the longest in Secret Service history by about five months. The Secret Service budgeted $106.65 million for the 2008 campaign cycle, compared to $73.3 million in 2004.
"I thought we had a very, very good plan in place for the campaign," Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan said in an interview with The Associated Press earlier this week. "If past history was any type of an indicator, we anticipated picking up protection somewhere in January, February, March of 2008."
"But the campaigns are different now," Sullivan said.
Obama received Secret Service protection on May 3, 2007 -- the earliest the agency has ever stepped in to protect a candidate.

They would have been selling them here if there was someone buying them here. Fuel prices have been high overseas for a long time. Damn good point. You hear a lot of people complaining about the "Big 3" and their big cars and wantin' to know why it took 'em so long to downsize cars and truck. All the while they've got a Suburban or Excursion parked out in the driveway next to a Queen Mary-Sized luxury car of one make or another.
Look WTF ya bought and you wonder why they didn't put out more smaller cars??? They've had smaller cars on the market for decades. People keep buyin' the bigger ones though...
But, there are still folks that do actually need the bigger car or truck. So, they've got to fill that demand too...

Ford has been selling cars for years overseas that get 30-40 MPG, I was wondering how long it was going to take before they finally got smart and sold them here.
We have been getting alot of people with big trucks and SUV begging us to write the estimate has high as possible so the insurance companies will total them and they get get them paid off. I have to remind them about insurance fraud........

Hey, I saw a car-hauler full of new Challengers on the road yesterday...
Would love to have one. But, I can't afford it. Maybe I can and don't want to tie up my money in a car payment. One of the guys at work had an Escalade (Cadillac) and his payment was over $700.00 a month, for 6 or 7 years. Best thing ever happened to him is when he totalled it...
So, I'll continue to buy used cars and trucks...
